The name “Waukesha” is an Anglicization of the Potawatomi name “Wau-tsha,”. The name comes from the first leader of the local tribe during the first European settlement in the area in 1834.
The part of Wisconsin that Waukesha County occupies was a part of Michigan Territory when Milwaukee County was organized in September 1834. In January 1846, part of Milwaukee County was split off into Waukesha County.
The county has a total area of 581 square miles, of which 550 square miles is land and 31 square miles is water.
Waukesha County is a great place if you’re looking for quality of life, good neighborhoods, cultural activities and stable families.
And that’s not all! The northwestern corner of Waukesha County is also referred to as “Lake Country” by local residents because of its large number of lakes. This includes Pewaukee, Delafield, Hartland, Merton, Nashotah, Chenequa, Okauchee Lake, Oconomowoc, Summit, and Lac La Belle.
