The village of Big Bend, Wisconsin was named for the river bend and has a total area of 3.15 square miles. It is located in southeastern Waukesha County bordered by the Fox River on the south and along I-43 on the north.
The village was first inhabited by families from Vermont in 1836. The area became known because of the enterprising ways of the Putnam brothers who settled near a “big bend” in the Fox River in anticipation of the Great Wisconsin Lands Sale of 1839.
The Putnam brothers were responsible for building the first sawmill in 1831, the first inn in 1842, and the first post office in 1846. The village was incorporated in 1928.
Big Bend is home to about 1300 residents and offers an active adult program, the Lions Club, and a public library. The average high temperatures here range from 27 in January to 83 in July.

Today, the village of Big Bend is home to a post office, a realty office, a pharmacy, several dentists, two banks, restaurants, salons, and other thriving businesses. There are also three industrial parks here, including the one on Industrial Ave. off of Edgewood.
Big Bend Village is located within the Mukwonago Area School District. The Big Bend Elementary School (grades K-6) is located on the edge of the Village in the Town of Vernon, while the High School and Middle School (grades 7 & 8) are located in Mukwonago.
There are also two private schools in Big Bend. They are Christ Lutheran School, located on Clark St. and St. Joseph’s School, located on Milwaukee Avenue.
The Village of Big Bend is also home to two parks. The main park is conveniently located next to the river. Residents enjoy its playground equipment, boat launch, baseball diamond, and picnic area and camping facilities. The other park, located on Cherry Street, contains a soccer field.
